Nick Reiner wants to access trust fund to pay for legal defense

As discussed at a court hearing in Los Angeles this morning, accused murderer Nick Reiner seeks to access money from the $1.5 million-plus trust fund set up by his parents Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner to fund his legal defense. Rob and Michele were found stabbed to death in their home in December; Nick has since been charged with their murder.

Nick’s attorneys have been trying to access the funds for months already, and it doesn’t sound like they got much closer as of today. Reiner is currently represented by public defender Anita Wu, who pressed today that “The clock is really running on his preparation of his defense. This is not something that can continue to wait.” Per Variety, Judge Ruben Garcia set a hearing on the issue for October 23.

The reason behind the issue stems back a few years. According to Deadline, Reiner was eligible for his $558,000 portion of the trust when he turned 30 in 2023, but a trustee in charge of the fund says that Nick turned it down at the time, keeping it as property of the trust for the time being. (He could seemingly access it again when he turns 35.) Reiner counters that he was never offered the money “to the best of my recollection.”

Reiner’s legal team and advocates insist that he needs the money to fund a top-tier legal defense, which they say is especially vital after Reiner faced new charges last week. On Wednesday, Reiner received a new charge of lying-in-wait to commit the murders. A hearing related to the criminal case is scheduled for September 15.
