Given Bob Odenkirk’s comedy background, when he throws on his summer florals, packs the kids in the car, and picks up his hammy dad (Christopher Lloyd) in the Nobody 2 trailer, it could pass as a reboot for National Lampoon’s Vacation. And, well, it is kinda funny that he accidentally takes his family on vacation to a town that’s secretly a den of drug mules and crooked cops. But rather than bumble through the adventure like a clueless comedy dad, Odenkirk’s Hutch is a former hitman prepared to kick some ass.
Like many a middle-class American dad, Hutch has alienated his family by becoming a bit of a workaholic since we saw him last. So he and his wife his wife Becca (Connie Nielsen) “decide to take their kids (Gage Munroe, Paisley Cadorath) on a short getaway to Wild Bill’s Majestic Midway and Waterpark, the one and only place where Hutch and his brother Harry (RZA) went on a vacation as kids,” per the film’s synopsis. “With Hutch’s dad (Lloyd) in tow, the family arrives in the small tourist town of Plummerville (‘Plummerville is Summerville!’), eager for some fun in the sun. But when a minor encounter with some town bullies yanks the family into the crosshairs of a corrupt theme-park operator (John Ortiz) and his shady sheriff (Colin Hanks), Hutch finds himself the focus of the most unhinged, blood-thirsty crime boss he (or anyone) has ever encountered (Sharon Stone).”
In the Nobody 2 trailer, Hutch is quite disgruntled that henchmen keep interrupting his family vacation, but in all fairness, he’s the one who poked the hornet’s nest. Even when Becca specifically asked him not to stir up trouble with those nasty carnival workers, he couldn’t help beating the shit out of them (not a particularly good influence for his son, either). “We all have different sides, but most of all, you’re a dad,” Becca lectures her husband in the trailer. “Go fix this shit.” You can see for yourself if he does, in fact, fix this shit when Nobody 2 premieres in theaters August 15.
