For years Goner Records has chronicled Memphis’ garage and punk scenes, bringing the world the likes of Jay Reatard and King Khan & BBQ Show in the process. One of the city’s recent exports is Nots, a band that’s released a bevy of 7-inches and the powerful full-length, We Are Nots. Goner will release the band’s sophomore album, Cosmetic, on September 9, which sees the band pushing its sound into spacey new directions. Along with that comes a 7-inch that reinvents one of the album’s tracks into a borderline darkwave affair. The A.V. Club is streaming the drum machine-laden alternate take of “Cold Line” below, which forgoes the propulsive energy of the Cosmetic version for a bleak goth song that shows Nots could totally shift direction and still be wildly exciting.
Pre-orders for Cosmetic are available now, as well as the accompanying 7-inch, through Goner Records.
