Once Upon A Time In Harlem is composed of footage shot by William Greaves in the 1970s and newly assembled into a documentary by his son David. The film captures a party in Harlem that brings together cultural luminaries from the 1920s and 1930s. It’s been called one of the year’s best documentaries (in a year that is packed to the gills with good documentaries).
“Once Upon A Time In Harlem brings the personalities, ideas, and debates behind the Harlem Renaissance to life for a new generation of New Yorkers,” says Mayor Mamdani in a statement. “We are proud to partner with the filmmaking team to offer free screenings to New Yorkers this weekend, ensuring that as many New Yorkers as possible get the chance to experience this film. Our city owes a debt of gratitude to the artists of the Harlem Renaissance whose enduring legacy is still felt in every jazz club, in every gallery, and in the movement for social justice that still continues to this day.”
