Oscar Isaac "open" to working with Disney if it doesn't "succumb to fascism"

The Star Wars actor was vocally unhappy with Disney in the days after Jimmy Kimmel's suspension.

Oscar Isaac

Oscar Isaac would consider returning to the galaxy far, far away—on one condition. “I’d be open to it, although right now I’m not so open to working with Disney,” the actor, who played X-wing pilot Poe Dameron in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise Of Skywalker, responded recently when asked by GQ for his thoughts on reprising the role. “But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great,” he added.

GQ‘s editors note that the outlet’s conversation with Isaac was held two days after Disney-owned ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! over the host’s comments on the Republican response to Charlie Kirk’s death in September. Kimmel’s suspension was lifted four days after the interview took place, and Oscar hasn’t shared any updated thoughts on the matter. “If that happens” (aka Disney manages not to slip further into authoritarianism) “then yeah, I’d be open to having a conversation about a galaxy far away,” he did say at the time. “Or any number of other things.”

He’s changed his tune on this a couple times in the past. Back in 2020, the actor said on a panel that the Star Wars films were “not really what I set out to do,” per IndieWire. “What I set out to do was to make handmade movies, and to work with people that inspire me,” he continued, quipping that he’d make another Star War only if he “need[ed] another house or something.” (Speaking of handmade movies, he got his wish with Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.) “That was a real likable quote. Jesus Christ,” he reflected on that moment to GQ. “Y’know, people ask you things, you say stuff, you don’t really think about it that much. I said a slightly dickish thing.” Variety notes that Isaac also seemed open to the possibility of returning to the franchise “if there was something good to do with that” in an interview back in August, before Kimmel was suspended.

Regardless of whether we actually get to see Poe Dameron again, Isaac doesn’t seem like one to hold a grudge against Disney—as long as the company continues to resist a certain Sith Lord of our own. “I think I try to give the benefit of the doubt often,” he said. “Try to speak just what’s true, and what doesn’t divide people so much. That’s a Joseph Goldstein thing, a Buddhist monk thing. Yeah, I think I’ve definitely attempted to be more forgiving and to let go of resentments, the older I am.”
