What a wonderful night for Oscar. (Oscar. Oscar.) And a big night for Karla Sofía Garcón, the Emilia Pérez star turned world’s most notorious tweeter, who faces the industry after torpedoing the film’s record-setting number of Oscar nominations. Garcón may have a historic night and become the first trans woman to win Best Actress. While this controversy has sucked up a lot of air space in the weeks leading up to the show, host Conan O’Brien had the honor of loosening up the crowd and deflating Pérez’s balloon before it popped. In his opening monologue, O’Brien took potshots at the Best Picture nominees, joking that Wicked was for anyone who always wondered where the Wizard Of Oz characters went to college and how he didn’t want The Brutalist to end (and thankfully, it didn’t). Yet, a stealth Emilia Pérez got the night off in good form.
