Long-running indie zine Punk Planet announced today that it has shipped its final issue. The Chicago-based magazine is closing its doors after 80 issues and 13 years covering independent culture, though its book imprint, Punk Planet Books, will continue, as will the magazine's community-based website. Punk Planet took a big hit in October 2005 when its independent newsstand distributor went out of business, taking with it thousands of dollars it owed the magazine. Punk Planet stayed afloat thanks to merchandise sales, donations, and the surprising success of Joe Meno's novel Hairstyles Of The Damned, but never fully recovered. In an e-mail, co-editor Anne Elizabeth Moore also cited declining advertising dollars and subscription sales as factors in the magazine's demise. Punk Planet #80 will hit the stands in about two weeks.
