Ridley Scott wants "the kid from Adolescence" for his Treasure Island movie

Scott wants to pair Owen Cooper up with Hugh Jackman's Long John Silver for his Treasure Island adaptation.

Ridley Scott wants

It’s not every Treasure Island adaptation that has you more creeped out by its fresh-faced Jim Hawkins than its grizzled pirate, Long John Silver, but that might wind up being the case with Ridley Scott’s. Scott (currently on the campaign trail for his latest film The Dog Stars) has, after all, already confirmed that certified nice guy Hugh Jackman—cinema’s Wolverine!—will be playing his personal version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famed pirate/fast seafood namesake. But as for Hawkins, the director is going for a kid who recently gave one of the most chilling performances in recent memory: Owen Cooper—or, as Scott himself charmingly referred to him in a recent interview, “The kid from Adolescence.”

This is per Collider‘s recent interview with Scott, where he confirmed that he’s currently in casting for Treasure Island, which he’s now formally set as his next project. Jackman’s been nailed down for the movie for a while at this point, but Scott also said he’s now pursuing fellow member of the Hugh Crew Hugh Grant for a part, as well as Cooper. Who’s had a small, but dense, career since making his debut with Adolescence, where he played young murder suspect Jamie Miller during the show’s critically celebrated four-episode run. Since then, Cooper’s appeared in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, as the young version of Jacob Elordi’s Heathcliff, and has lined up a number of other projects in a very short span of time, i.e., since about five minutes after casting directors in Hollywood saw the show’s landmark third episode and immediately went, “Oh, okay.”

Scott began making noises about tackling Treasure Island back in June, signing Jackman on at the time. Possibly not coincidentally, Scott’s writer and executive producer for the project is Jack Thorne, who co-created Adolescence, and is thus very familiar with Cooper’s talents. Meanwhile, the film will—as far as we can work out—be the first non-Muppets or Disney cartoon space pirate movie adaptation of Stevenson’s tale since 1999, when Jack Palance starred as Silver in a little-remembered effort from director Peter Rowe.
