Read this: Paulie has Jon Taffer to thank for his Rocky IV robot girlfriend

As explained in a history published by Defector, Taffer's sci-fi nightclub, Pulsars, featured a state-of-the-art robot who commented on clubgoers' "ta-tas." It would later come to be in Paulie's stead.

Rocky IV is known for many things. A James Brown performance. A montage of Sylvester Stallone chopping wood and running through the snow. The phrase, “If he dies, he dies.” But few, if any, can top the film’s most baffling and greatest decisions, one Stallone would excise in a 2021 director’s cut: Giving Adrian’s lonely older brother, Paulie (Burt Young), a robot girlfriend that many intelligent people believe he banged. That robot was already a celebrity when he stole America’s heart in Rocky IV and the Carly Simon music video “My New Boyfriend,” and surprisingly, Bar Rescue‘s Jon Taffer plays a role in the bot’s story.

Earlier today, Defector published a piece by author John Semley on the history of Pulsar, the robotic breakout star of Taffer’s mid-’80s sci-fi-themed Philadelphia nightclub, Pulsations. In addition to being a well-researched and very funny piece about the 50,000 square-foot club with an $8 million spaceship, the story goes deep on a robot named Pulsar, who rolled around the dance floor and wowed clubgoers with his catchphrase, “My! What bodacious ta-tas you have!” Taffer left his job at a Borscht Belt hotel to manage Pulsations, where Pulsar was the star attraction. He described people seeing the robot and beholding the spaceship as “the closest to a religious experience that I’ve seen without it being religious.” Taffer also claims Pulsar was the robot leased to Stallone for Rocky IV.  Not all agree. However, Jim Digby, the technician who operated Pulsar at Pulsations, says it might’ve been “Pulsar’s brother,” SICO, the robot used on opening night and in the club during Pulsar’s development.

It’s a fascinating story about a weird nightclub, featuring a disgusting story about ECW’s Sandman for all the pro-wrestling sickos out there.
