Sinners singer Rod Wave arrested on day of first Grammy nomination

Rod Wave, the artist behind “Sinners,” the song that plays near the end of Ryan Coogler’s film of the same name, was arrested on drug and weapons charges in Atlanta last Friday, per Rolling Stone. Friday was also the day this year’s Grammy nominations were announced, during which Wave (real name Rodarius Green) received a nod for Best Song Written for Visual Media. It was his first from the Academy.

According to online records reviewed by RS, Green was booked on two counts of possessing a controlled substance, possession of a firearm or knife, and reckless driving. His lawyer, Drew Findling, confirmed that he was released the next day on an $8,000 bond. Green was “unjustly profiled and unlawfully arrested,” according to a statement from Findling and fellow attorneys Marissa Goldberg and Zack Findling. They claimed the musician’s arresting officer was part of the Atlanta Police Department’s “controversial Crime Suppression Unit—a group known for its aggressive tactics and emphasis on high arrest numbers rather than genuine public safety.”

“Mr. Green was targeted as part of this quota-driven approach, a practice that undermines justice and erodes community trust.” their statement continued. “We look forward to vigorously challenging this baseless arrest and the clear violations of Mr. Green’s rights in court.”

Earlier this summer, Green was arrested on more than a dozen charges including aggravated assault, possessing and aiming a gun at someone, reckless conduct, conspiracy to commit a felony, simple assault, and battery. At the time, he was released on a $50,000 bond. “There is no truth to these charges,” Drew Findling told RS. “Rod Green was a victim of a burglary and committed no crimes. How he was even charged as a result of this situation is incomprehensible. This will absolutely be resolved favorably to Mr. Green.”

In addition to “Sinners,” Green also recently dropped a single called “Leavin” and a collaboration with Tee Grizzley called “Voicemail.” His most recent album as Rod Wave, Last Lap, was released last year.
