Actual plot details for the Travis Knight-directed feature have been kept under wraps, but cast announcements have been rolling out pretty regularly. Red, White & Royal Blue‘s Nicholas Galitzine will star as the film’s central giant blonde hero He-Man, with Jared Leto set up as his arch-nemesis, Skeletor. Some of the following character names may be either filled with nostalgia or sound a bit “Zendaya is Meechee” to you, but the film also stars Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress, James Purefoy as King Randor, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Malcolm/Fisto, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops.
Mattel has been in the plastic-toy-to-cinematic-universe game for decades. The animated series He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe originally landed on Earth in 1983, one year after the launch of Mattel’s He-Man action figure. That doll has since spawned multiple comics, games, books, and films, all generally following Prince Adam/He-Man’s quest to defend the planet Eternia and Castle Grayskull from the evil Skeletor.
Zamata may not own a magic sword that turns her into a superhero (that we know of, at least), but she’s doing just fine on her own. Last year, she appeared in Agatha All Along and voiced the literal devil (in cat form) for Netflix’s Exploding Kittens series. She also voice acts for Marvel’s Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur, and released her own comedy special, Sasheer Zamata: The First Woman, in 2023.
