Plans for Scream 8 are reportedly in motion

With Neve Campbell leading the franchise again, it may live for a while longer.

Plans for Scream 8 are reportedly in motion

The Scream franchise has seemed dead multiple times, so it shouldn’t be too surprising when each rumor turns out to be greatly exaggerated. That being said, the road to get Scream 7 to theaters, where it opens this weekend, was tumultuous, to put it mildly. While in production, the film lost both of its leads and its director which led to a script rewrite that cost about $500,000, according to a new report from Variety. This also necessitated bringing back long-time final girl Neve Campbell, who the production apparently couldn’t afford for the sixth installment. The trade reports that she was paid $7 million to get her back for Scream 7. (Fellow returning star Courteney Cox was paid about $2 million, for comparison.) But now that that’s all settled, it seems there’s no stopping Ghostface.

The Variety report notes at the end that “Insiders suggest plans are already in place” for a potential Scream 8. That would presumably include Campbell and Cox given all the hooplah about the returning characters for this year’s installment. Scream 7 also plans to introduce Sidney Prescott’s daughter—who appeared as an infant in the fifth movie—who could potentially anchor the films going forward. But the series already kind of tried that with Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera’s characters, and more Scream may be somewhat contingent on Campbell. “Neve Campbell is to Scream what Jamie Lee Curtis is for the Halloween franchise,” says one analyst quoted in the Variety story. Curtis played Laurie Strode for 44 years—we’re only on year 30 of Scream. Not even death can keep the original characters away.
