Shark jumps shark in this Smash Mouth-Santana monstrosity
The temptation with any new Smash Mouth or “Smooth”-related mashup is to say, “Ha, ha, all right gang, we’ve had some fun, but let’s call it a day.” The joke was never funny, which was why it was funny, but that quality also makes it impossible to say when it stopped being funny. An intentionally unfunny joke can only get more unfunny, thus clarifying the reason it was told in the first place.
That being said: Maybe we’re there? Maybe we’re done? Here is the song “All Star” by Smash Mouth, but it is sung to the tune of “Walking On The Sun,” also by Smash Mouth. It’s sort of hard to tell where one ends and the next begins, a quality exacerbated by the fact that it is set to the video for Santana’s “Smooth,” because why not. There’s an uneasy body horror element to the whole thing, an unnatural embodiment being forced to perform against its will—as if there is a mind trapped somewhere deep within this monstrosity begging only to die.
The truth is that it will not. There is always another shark—it’s shark after shark, swimming through the digital ocean, stretching to a horizon that never comes. We shall jump them all; they are always being jumped; there is no shark at all.
