The original Sicario trio, composed of Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin, is in talks to return for a third installment of the franchise for Black Label Media and Thunder Road, according to Deadline. Other details are sparse, but Padraic McKinley is reportedly set to direct a script by Steven Knight, who recently wrote House of Guinness, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, and the Oasis concert documentary. The first two films were distributed through Lionsgate, but according to Deadline, the sequel is a hot commodity and multiple studios are interested. Sicario 3 will reportedly start filming in early 2027.
The first Sicario film, directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by then-first-screenwriter Taylor Sheridan before his massive success with the Yellowstone universe, was released in 2015. The movie centered on Blunt’s Kate Macer, an FBI special agent who’s recruited to join a Department of Defense covert task force targeting the leader of a Mexican drug cartel. The task force is run by CIA officer Matt Graver (Brolin) and his associate Alejandro Gillick (Del Toro), a prosecutor turned assassin. Blunt’s performance as a protagonist who serves as the film’s moral compass was specifically highlighted; her return in Sicario 3 is a welcome addition, since her character was noticeably absent from the 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day Of The Soldado, which brought back Del Toro and Brolin, with less nuanced storytelling and much more violence. Sicario 2 ended with Alejandro surviving an assassination attempt and talking to Miguel Hernandez (Elijah Rodriguez) about his potential future as a sicario (aka a hitman). The payoff of that cliffhanger is getting closer.
