That’s a question you might ask based on the newly announced additions to The Homecoming Concert lineup. On one hand, you’ve got someone like Dave Grohl, who has reached definite “friend of the show” status. On the other hand, you’ve got Ms. Lauryn Hill—a big get, to be sure!—who only appeared as musical guest once in 1998. Her Fugees collaborator Wyclef Jean is also on the Homecoming Concert lineup, but the Fugees never served as musical guest nor did Wyclef Jean on his own. It seems less like a “friend of the show” concert and more like a flex that the SNL name can attract such top-tier talent. If Lorne Michaels can smooth things over between Jean and Hill and their erstwhile pal Pras to reunite the Fugees for this thing, it will be the biggest flex of all.
Anyway, the other new Homecoming Concert performers include Cher, Snoop Dogg, and St. Vincent. They join a previously announced lineup that includes the likes of David Byrne, Robyn, the Backstreet Boys, Lady Gaga, Jack White, “and more…” as the poster promises. According to an NBC press release, the event will also feature appearances from Ana Gasteyer, Andy Samberg, Maya Rudolph, Paul Shaffer, Tracy Morgan, Will Ferrell, “and more surprise guests.” Jimmy Fallon is set to host The Homecoming Concert, which will be livestreamed on Peacock at 8 PM E.T. on February 14. Michaels is an executive producer of the show alongside Grammy Award winner Mark Ronson.
