Official Star Wars magazine will cease publication after more than 30 years

Earlier today, GQ published an interview with Oscar Isaac in which the actor said he’d consider playing Poe Dameron again (with a pretty big caveat). If he does, you probably won’t get to read about it in Star Wars Insider, the official print magazine of the Star Wars franchise. The magazine will officially cease publication early next year with its 237th issue, Lucasfilm announced. “Insider has been a big part of my Star Wars experience for a very long time, both as a fan and professionally,” editor Christopher Cooper shared in a statement. “It’s been an honor to explore the galaxy far, far away with our readers during my eight year tenure. But publishing has changed immeasurably since the Lucasfilm Fan Club magazine, and we live in an increasingly digital age, which sadly means that this chapter in Star Wars Insider‘s history is coming to an end.”

The magazine published its first issue under the Insider moniker in 1994, though its origins go back a lot farther than that. The idea’s earliest incarnation came in 1978 with the Official Star Wars Fan Club newsletter, Lucasfilm writes. The newsletter eventually evolved into the Lucasfilm Fan Club magazine, which debuted its first issue in 1987. (In a little trip down memory lane, the studio shared that that issue’s cover featured C-3PO and R2-D2 holding a cake with 10 candles on it to celebrate the 10th anniversary of 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope.) The title was changed to Star Wars Insider for the magazine’s 23rd issue, and the rest is history.

Almost four decades later, Star Wars Insider‘s next issue (#235) will mark a different 10th anniversary: that of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The new issue will arrive December 9, with the magazine’s final two issues hitting shelves early next year.
