After a near-15-year hiatus, Stereolab is returning this spring with a new album. The band announced the release of Instant Holograms On Metal Film this morning, their first new project since Not Music arrived in November 2010. The record is due out on May 23, and the musicians shared the first single from the project, “Aerial Troubles,” today.
The band first began teasing their return 16 years to the day after they announced their indefinite hiatus. Per Resident Advisor, select subscribers to the band’s newsletter were sent a 7-inch single of “Aerial Troubles,” as well as a word search that offered clues that new music was coming. Stereolab will also be heading out on tour beginning in May, performing dates across Europe this summer before bringing the show to North America this fall. You can check out all of the tour dates here.
Though the band released an album in 2010 (consisting of outtakes and recordings from the sessions of their 2008 album Chemical Chords), they announced their indefinite hiatus in 2009. In April of that year, manager Martin Pike wrote that the band “are all going to have a bit of a rest now after nearly 19 years and work on a few other projects,” per Pitchfork. Apparently, they’re now well-rested enough for a new album. You can check out the “Aerial Troubles” music video, directed by Laurent Askienazy, and the tracklist for the forthcoming album below.
