Supergirl gets picked up for a second season—on The CW
Though the stakes haven’t been as high as they were in DC’s Crisis On Infinite Earths (the comic that killed off Supergirl in the ’80s), CBS’ Supergirl series has still been fighting for its life almost since it premiered last October. In November, a rumor came out that Supergirl’s ratings weren’t looking good enough to warrant a second season, but CBS was apparently banking on the possibility of a crossover with The CW’s The Flash to give it a little boost. That crossover actually happened in March, but a push from the fastest man alive still didn’t do much to convince CBS that Supergirl was worth holding on to. Earlier this month, though, we reported that there was a chance CBS would slash the show’s budget and move it to The CW—which it co-owns—while also taking the production from Los Angeles to Vancouver (where The CW’s existing superhero shows are filmed).
Now, surprisingly, that’s actually what’s going to happen. According to Deadline, Supergirl has been renewed for a second season that will air on The CW instead of CBS, and Kara’s hometown of National City is going to look a lot more Canadian than it used to. It’s still too early to say how much of a direct impact this will have on the show itself—especially in terms of special effects, sets, and the cast—but The Hollywood Reporter says that star Melissa Benoist will be making the move (obviously), along with Calista Flockhart, who had previously suggested that she’d prefer to stay in Los Angeles if the show did move. That should be good news to Supergirl fans, as Benoist and Flockhart were the two most reliably entertaining parts of the first season. Plus, the odds of her getting to hang out with the Flash again just got a lot better.
