Taylor Lautner leans in, decides to make werewolf show

The Twilight franchise was both wildly successful and widely derided. Given the chilly critical reception to the films, you never would’ve guessed back then that leads Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart would go on to become two of the most critically acclaimed performers of their generation. Meanwhile, at the third point of the Twilight love triangle, there’s Taylor Lautner, whose most recent credit is his ex-girlfriend’s music video. (In 2023.) So yeah, it’s about time to lean in on the glory days.

Enter Taylor Lautner: Werewolf Hunter, the scripted series announced on Wednesday. “After wrapping the final Twilight film, Taylor Lautner vanished from the spotlight. Fans speculated, tabloids theorized—but the truth is wilder than fiction. Taylor wasn’t just taking a mental health break. He was preparing for his real calling…Taylor Lautner: Werewolf Hunter,” reads a series synopsis (via Variety). “Playing himself, Taylor is drawn into a secret society of werewolf trackers who need his unique expertise. As he navigates his double life—Hollywood actor by day, supernatural warrior by night—Taylor must wrestle with the ultimate irony: fighting the very creatures that made him famous. Between saving the world, reviving his career, and falling in love, he faces the ultimate question—what happens when your biggest role becomes your greatest enemy?”

Variety reports that Taylor Lautner: Werewolf Hunter was brought to Amazon MGM Studios by The Tornante Company, the studio behind Tuca & Bertie, Undone, and BoJack Horseman (a show that is also an apt satire of a Hollywood star past his prime). However, it seems like this is going the live-action route, as Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence have signed on as directors and executive producers. The presence of the Ready Or Not filmmakers also suggests the production will lean into the horror comedy vibe. Daisy Gardner, whose previous credits include Single Drunk Female and 30 Rock, created the series and will serve as showrunner.

Lautner will executive produce as well as star in the show. He has some comedy experience under his belt—in fact, his post-Twilight resumé is mostly comedies, including Adam Sandler’s The Ridiculous 6, Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens, and the U.K. series Cuckoo. He’ll next be seen in the romantic comedy The Token Groomsman. He’s also famously really good at backflips
