Tech nerds and comedy nerds join forces for stand-up streaming app
Music streaming services like Pandora and Spotify offer stand-up comedy content, but they’re not the ideal platforms for people who want to laugh but don’t want to click on the wrong thing and accidentally hear music instead. At least that’s the basic pitch for Laugh.ly, a new app that’s in the works from David T. Scott (who the press release calls a “Silicon Valley veteran”) and Funny Or Die board member Randy Adams. The service won’t launch until this summer, but it’ll apparently have “the most extensive comedy library available,” with “tens of thousands of stand-up comedy routines” from people like Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Hannibal Buress, George Carlin, Chris Rock, and more. It’ll also offer self-publishing tools that will allow aspiring comics to upload their own comedy albums.
The model for Laugh.ly sounds very Pandora-like, with users able to access it online or with an iOS/Android app, and there will be both an ad-supported free version and a (presumably ad-less) premium tier called “Front Row Seating” that will cost $7.99 a month. Anyone interested in signing up for an early beta can do so at LaughRadio.com.
