The Comedy Awards like Tina Fey, Eastbound And Down, and Easy A, among other things
As announced last month, MTV/Comedy Central parent company Viacom is getting into the lobbing-trophies game with its newly inaugurated The Comedy Awards, recognizing the year’s people who think they’re sooooo funny. Today the Comedy Awards committee—a board of directors that includes names like Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Lily Tomlin, Don Rickles, Billy Crystal, Joan Rivers, Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg, Seth MacFarlane, and Conan O’Brien—unveiled their first-ever list of nominees, with winners to be chosen by a voting body of more than 1,000 other members of the humor community and then awarded during the April 10 broadcast.
As you can see, the TV field is pretty much dominated by 30 Rock, with nods in the best series, directing, writing, and all of the acting categories, but unlike the Emmys or Golden Globes, here it will face off against oft-ignored shows Eastbound And Down and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. This is also one of the few awards shows where you’ll see nominations for Childrens Hospital, Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, and Archer, which just about justifies the whole endeavor—as does the fact that Glee only got one piddling nomination. (Hopefully its one glaring oversight—the complete exclusion of Parks And Recreation—can be explained by its absence from the fall schedule and will be rectified next year.)
Meanwhile, the feature film race seems like a dead heat between Easy A, Cyrus, and Kick-Ass, which apparently counts as a comedy. Also, they must super-love Tina Fey, considering they nominated her for both 30 Rock and her performance in Date Night, and are probably just recognizing Anne Hathaway for Love And Other Drugs as a way to get Anne Hathaway to come to their show. Anyway, here’s the complete list from Deadline.
