They say slow and steady wins the race, but that hasn’t been easy for the DCEU’s Flash, Ezra Miller, who expressed disappointment last year over the delays that have kept the character’s standalone film at a standstill. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. hired Game Night directors and Spider-Man: Homecoming scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to steer The Flash in the right direction, but the hurdles keep on coming.
Variety reports that script issues are delaying the film’s planned start date of March, and that Miller’s commitments to the Fantastic Beasts franchise mean that shooting won’t begun until late 2019. That means a probable release date of 2021. The script’s long been in gestation, with the studio hiring King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword writer Joby Harold to overhaul the previous draft nearly two years ago.
Buried in Variety’s story is another intriguing bit of news, namely that sources are saying Ben Affleck is really, truly on his way out as Batman. “Following the box office disappointment of Justice League, Warner Bros. has been reevaluating its approach to making movies based on DC Comics characters. The studio is not moving forward with Batman and Superman movies featuring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, respectively,” it reads, adding that the studio “is expected to recast the Dark Knight with a different actor.” This news comes after an August report from TheWrap quoted numerous industry sources as saying Affleck’s post-rehab insurance costs could cost him the role.
