There’s a lot to admire about Carrie Coon’s Bertha Russell, but she seems like a hard person to live with. Her daughter Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) knows this better than almost anyone. In season 1, she was seldom allowed to leave the house because she hadn’t been debuted to society yet. In the second, she was the object of interest for every bachelor from Newport to New York. At the top of the trailer for season 3, Gladys has just had her portrait painted, signifying “the moment when a young girl turns into a woman,” in the words of Bertha. Is she ready for that? Or will it all unravel and come crashing to the ground, like the pearls on her necklace?

You could apply this question to practically all of the characters in The Gilded Age, who are doing their best to navigate the whims and rules of high society in the final trailer for the upcoming season. Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon) is back living with her sister Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) and donned in mourning black after her doomed marriage to Reverend Forte. Likewise, Marian is dealing with the fallout from her breakup with her distant cousin Dashiell. Meanwhile, Peggy Scott (Denée Benton), always the character with the most awareness of the outside world, would like to vote. And George Russell (Morgan Spector), well, he’s still trying to keep his railroad business on track!

The Gilded Age returns to HBO on June 22 at 9 pm. You’ll have to wait until then to see whether the residents of 61st and 5th ever wake up from the American Dream.
