The end is coming for The Handmaid’s Tale, and hopefully for Gilead as well—at least if June Osborne has anything to say about it. “Rise up, and fight for your freedom!” Elisabeth Moss’ character shouts as a rallying cry for the revolution the series has been teasing since its first look last year. “We use all of our friends, everyone and anyone who hates Gilead, to finally declare: Enough.”
We’ve known that all-out war is coming for the fascist state for a while now, but the first full-length trailer for the show’s sixth and final season lets audiences in on a few more key details about how it will all go down. June’s allies Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and Moira (Samira Wiley) are back to help usher in the revolution, as well as a band of knife-wielding, red-cloaked women dead set on revenge. Ann Dowd is also back in the mix as the fearsome Aunt Lydia, as well as Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy and Max Minghella as June’s lover, Nick.
If you want a little more of a tease than is provided by the new trailer, the season’s logline reads as follows: “In the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, June’s unyielding spirit and determination pull her back into the fight to take down Gilead. Luke and Moira join the resistance. Serena tries to reform Gilead while Commander Lawrence and Aunt Lydia reckon with what they have wrought, and Nick faces challenging tests of character. This final chapter of June’s journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom.”
The “beginning of the end” of The Handmaid’s Tale, to quote June, has been in the works for a while. Season one premiered all the way back in 2017, and the series hasn’t aired a new episode since the season five finale in November 2022. Still, if you do want to return to Gilead (or what’s left of it) for some reason after the series finale, Hulu has more horrors in store with follow-up series The Testaments, based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name. Hailing from The Handmaid’s Tale creator Bruce Miller, The Testaments will star Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday, and a returning Ann Dowd.
For now, The Handmaid’s Tale‘s revolution begins April 8 on Hulu.
