The internet has become strangely invested in Carrie Fisher’s weight

Carrie Fisher—currently in competition with her Star Wars: The Force Awakens co-star Harrison Ford for the fewest fucks ever given about a billion-dollar movie franchise—has been very candid about the fact that producers asked her to lose more than 35 pounds for the film. And that wasn’t easy, she says, telling Good Housekeeping magazine, “I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up. They might as well say get younger, because that’s how easy it is … We treat beauty like an accomplishment, and that is insane,” because what are they going to do, fire Princess-Now-General Leia?

And when a woman, particularly an ancient 59-year-old crone like Fisher, says sassy things about Hollywood beauty standards, of course there will be pushback. Yet, here is Fisher, displaying a shocking lack of concern over the sudden change in tenor in discussions of her appearance:

But her loose-lipped reign of operatic space terror is about to come to an end, as New York Post film critic Kyle Smith has penned an objectively quite impressive bit of trolling titled, “If Carrie Fisher doesn’t like being judged on looks, she should quit acting.” Which, sure, yeah, appearance is usually taken into account when considering whether an actor is right for any particular role. But Smith seems to have a special contempt for Fisher, saying she “made millions off being pretty” and “George Lucas only cast her in the first place because she was young, slim, and cute at the time.” (Of course, he’s just worried about her health: “She should be even more grateful for being nudged to get healthy,” he writes. Of course.) Sounds like someone’s General Hux audition didn’t go very well.
