The National Society of Film Critics really likes Llewyn Davis, you probably haven't heard him

While the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis has been entirely shut out of industry awards from the Producers, Writers, and Screen Actors Guilds—as though each had heard Llewyn’s rambling song and flatly declared, “I don’t see a lot of money here”—it continues to be well-received by a cult New York audience, as well as other more scholarly, disenfranchised types. First the Gotham Awards related to Llewyn’s depiction of their bleak and wintry city. And now the story of a frustrated outsider who offers unforgiving, bluntly disparaging takedowns of the art he loves under the principle that it’s just his job has similarly struck a chord with the National Society of Film Critics—you know, for whatever reason. It awarded Llewyn honors for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Actor (for Oscar Isaac), thus maintaining Llewyn Davis’ standing as a critically championed underdog, even if it means letting it sleep on the couch should it find itself locked out of Oscar season.

In the other major break from the now-established usual suspects, Spring Breakers’ James Franco was awarded Best Supporting Actor by critics who adored his performance—critics who weren’t even James Franco.
