Their psychological toll is Netflix’s reality TV entertainment in The New Stanford Prison Experiment, the streamer’s latest reality competition destined to drive contestants to the brink. Based on the ethically and scientifically dubious social experiment, in which Stanford University psychology professors paid 24 participants $15 to play prison for five days, Netflix’s latest reality show finally marries the bleak social outlook of Squid Game with the lawsuit-baiting psychological distress of Love Is Blind. As in the real experiment, contestants spend an extended period in a prison and are randomly assigned roles as prisoners or guards. The idea behind the original experiment was to see the psychological effects of being a prisoner or a prison guard to determine whether a “prison guard” would abusively lord over a “prisoner” in a simulation, just like they do in a real prison. Unsurprisingly, the answer is yes, obviously. The new Netflix game show asks: what if there was a rebellion? If only Netflix had gotten to MrBeast before Bezos did.
