The news team of John Oliver and Cookie Monster is edutainment at its finest
John Oliver is quickly replacing Jon Stewart as the hyperbolic headline-generator of choice among Huffington Post types, and remains a critical darling despite a conspicuous lack of Emmy nods this year. But there’s one market he has yet to corner, and that’s children. Until now.
Oliver teamed up with the Sesame Street crew for W-ORD Channel 7 News With John Oliver And Cookie Monster, the show that simultaneously displays Oliver’s chops as a news anchor, reiterates his love of puppets, and proves his allegiance to his adopted homeland. (The UK has always been notoriously unimpressed with Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and friends.) Produced in conjunction with Sesame Workshop’s Words Are Here, There And Everywhere vocabulary initiative, the video also features cameos from Al Roker, Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon, and famous mustache-haver Nick Offerman, all of whom should delight the adults in the audience as well as their less-discriminating offspring. The outtakes are pretty great too, if less educational.
