The newly remastered Blu-ray is coming sometime later this year in celebration of the cult classic‘s 50th anniversary. Led by Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O’Brien (who also co-wrote the screenplay), Meat Loaf, and of course, Tim Curry, Rocky Horror inspired a theater-going phenomenon—one that’s never quite been repeated.
Now, fans can get a load of Meat Loaf’s corpse and Rocky’s gold underwear in even higher quality. Overseen by the Walt Disney Studios Restoration team, the 10-month project included a digital scan and preservation process that “ensures every frame of the cult classic is presented with unprecedented clarity and vibrancy,” according to a press release. The restoration also features a newly mixed Dolby Atmos audio track as well as a restored original mono audio track, so fans can choose to hear the lips sing in either enhanced quality or as they would have been heard when the film premiered back in 1975.
In a statement, producer Lou Adler said he didn’t expect The Rocky Horror Picture Show to be around very long when it was first released, “let alone…50 years.” “What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom,” he continued. “This anniversary is a tribute to the fans who kept it alive and kicking all these years.”
In that vein, the team behind the restoration notes that fans should “Watch for future announcements on the 50th anniversary celebrations.” Just try not to get caught in the rain on your way there… you never know what dimension you might stumble into.
