Tom Hanks and Marielle Heller have another project on the way

Tom Hanks and director Marielle Heller are reuniting for another bittersweet story prominently featuring a journalist. Variety reports that the two will work together for an adaptation of Dave Egger’s short story “The Comebacker,” which follows a jaded sports journalist reinvigorated by a pitcher moving from the minor leagues to the majors. Hanks is eyed to play the journalist character, whose stories about the pitcher resonate after the pitcher gets a head injury that makes him start speaking especially poetically. The original story is centered on the San Francisco Giants but, per Variety, the film is expected to center on the New York Mets. Bad Bunny and Colman Domingo are also eyed to appear in the film, which is currently the subject of a studio bidding war, with Sony in the lead.

Hanks and Heller previously worked together for 2019’s A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, in which Hanks portrayed Fred Rogers as a journalist, played by Matthew Rhys, wrote a profile about him. They first connected after he saw her first film, the also-excellent Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and they struck up a professional relationship and a friendship. “You know the thing about Tom Hanks is once you’re friends with Tom Hanks it feels casual like that,” Heller told The Hollywood Reporter around the release of A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood. “He’s really a normal-feeling guy. You don’t feel like you’re in conversation with one of the world’s biggest movie stars.” In any case, we’re glad to see those conversations kept going.
