Looks like Rust Cohle isn’t the only one obsessed with re-opening cold cases, as Entertainment Weekly reports that True Detective season three, long since left for dead, has begun to stir over at HBO. Writer James Hibberd says his sources at HBO tell him that series creator Nic Pizzolatto has written “at least the first two episodes” of a new season, although what those episodes are actually about is still anyone’s guess. (An occult used-car lot? A strip-club urinal that’s a portal to another dimension?) And to make this new season a reality, HBO has hired famously prickly Deadwood and NYPD Blue writer-producer David Milch to help the similarly prickly Pizzolatto get his ideas into order.
Beyond that, we don’t know much, which makes sense Pizzolatto has not been given a green light for True Detective season three. We do know that Milch will not serve as showrunner, and that season one star Matthew McConaughey is down to return, should Milch and Pizzolatto put their egos aside and decide to work together. No word on how this particular flat circle will overlap with that of the upcoming Deadwood movie, which was announced earlier this year.
