Universal has reportedly scrapped the Paul Greengrass-directed Memphis, which would have followed the final days of Martin Luther King Jr. up to and including his assassination—and fittingly, there’s already talk of conspiracy. While the studio’s official explanation is that they were concerned Greengrass, a notoriously slow worker, couldn’t get it together in time for the film’s scheduled release date around MLK Day in 2012, Deadline says there are rumors that King’s estate pressured the studio to call it off, either because they took issue with the script, or because they have already invested in a similar MLK project over at DreamWorks. Whatever the reason, one less MLK film on the schedule means that, suddenly, everything’s coming up Wesley Snipes, except for the prison stuff.
