Verity looks like a camp classic in the making

The rise of Colleen Hoover adaptations in Hollywood is about to intersect with modern, beach-read thrillers like A Simple Favor or The Housemaid. Previous Hoover adaptations It Ends With Us, Regretting You, and Reminders Of Him were romantic dramas about people named things like Lily Bloom and Ryle Kincaid and Atlas Corrigan who were putting their lives back together after vehicular manslaughter convictions or ending cycles of abuse. But the trailer we just saw for Verity, an adaptation of a 2018 Hoover novel, looks significantly more bananas than either of those, and not just because someone named Lowen Ashleigh has been hired to be the ghostwriter for a seemingly-vegetative Verity Crawford. The film seems to be aware of this quality; the pop song chosen to slow for unsettling effect in this trailer, for example, is Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.”
