Very French marching band performs Daft Punk to our nonplussed president

Every year on July 14th, France celebrates Bastille Day to commemorate the storming of the Bastille in 1789. The celebratory holiday is synonymous with French pride and is tantamount to France’s version of the Fourth Of July. So, it makes sense that during this year’s Bastille Day celebration, the French army marching band closed out the parade down the Champs-Élysées with a medley of one of the most quintessentially French musical acts in history: Daft Punk. Yes, whenever you think of France you immediately think of the Eiffel Tower, baguettes on the banks of the Seine, and two shiny space robots blasting funk-infused house music to a warehouse full of sweaty millennials. This is as French as it gets.

Throughout the video, the recently elected President Emmanuel Macron can be seen smiling and nodding along—perhaps fondly remembering his early 20s in the French club scene—while his fellow dignitaries clap along to covers of “Get Lucky,” “One More Time,” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.” President Trump also appears in the video, seeming unimpressed by or, more likely, unaware of the band’s musical imitation. The 71-year-old Trump looks as though he’s waiting for them to play a song he recognizes, perhaps something from his friend The Nuge. Though he may just be exhausted from the strenuous handshake earlier that day.
