At the tail end of 2016, We Leave At Midnight released The Holy Rolling Flower Band, an EP whose title fairly succinctly sums up what the band does so well. It evokes the band’s sound, which is a mix of psychedelia, funk, and the sound of a rolling paper brushing across the cover of a beat-up classic rock LP. Today, The A.V. Club is premiering the video for the EP’s opener, “Milo.” The video is a freewheeling journey that matches the song well, and approximates what a pleasant jaunt through a forest would be in the company of a mythical “rammoth.” Of the video, We Leave At Midnight’s John Dailey had this to say:
For “Milo” we worked with Frank Weysos, who has directed videos for bands such as Dr. Dog, Grace Potter, Heartless Bastards, Spanish Gold, Black Pistol Fire, and more. I had the idea to shoot it at the Japanese Tea Gardens in San Antonio and try stop animation for the first time. We filmed the rest of it at our friends art space K23 Gallery. I thought a fictitious “rammoth” and a cloud would be a good example of two unlikely lost creatures that should never of been together in the first place and find each other in the end. I’ve always thought cotton and yarn play well on camera too.
