When movies starring Anna Faris and Jason Statham account for the two biggest weekend box-office debuts, you can be pretty sure that the summer blockbuster season has dwindled down to nothing. Though Tropic Thunder held at No. 1 this weekend with $16.1 million, it was closely followed by Faris' sorori-comedy The House Bunny at No. 2 with $15.1 million and Statham's Death Race at No. 3 with $12.29 million. Tropic Thunder's healthy second weekend indicates that the film has recovered from its sluggish start–it actually found its way into more theaters this weekend than last, and is on its way recouping its $92 million budget.
This week's other new releases won't likely fare as well: Ice Cube-starring The Longshots barely got a top-10 nod at No. 8 with $4.3 million, while Rainn Wilson's The Rocker (No. 12, $2.75 million) and Steve Coogan's Hamlet 2 (all the way down at No. 22 with $435 thousand–though it only opened in a measly 103 theaters) seem to be non-starters. Oh well, they can't all be The Dark Knight, which is still pulling in eight figures in its sixth week of release (No. 4 with $10.3 million), placing it on track to become the fourth film ever to crack the $1 billion mark worldwide. Star Wars: The Clone Wars saw the biggest drop in the top 10–61 percent–but still landed at No. 5 with $5.6 million, followed by Pineapple Express at No. 6 with $5.6 million and Mirrors at No. 7 with $4.86 million. Mamma Mia! continues its slow burn, marking its sixth week in the top 10–the same amount of time as The Dark Knight–at No. 9 with $4.3 million. The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor rounds out the list with $4.1 million.
