Weekend Box Office
As if the current administration needed another signifier of its dwindling esteem in the eyes American public, the much-touted new biopic of our sitting president–a somewhat Bush-unfriendly one at that–pulled up lame at this weekend's box office. Oliver Stone's W. limped in at No. 4 with $10.55 million, behind two other new releases and a pack of talking dogs that refuse to go away.
Max Payne turned out to be the big draw this weekend, coming out on top with a solid $18 million. Not far behind, Beverly Hills Chihuahua continued its disheartening reign at the top of the charts, falling only slightly to No. 2 in its third week with $11.2 million–which puts it on track to pull in $100 million of beleaguered parents' hard-earned dinero. Despite opening in the fewest number of theaters this weekend, the period drama The Secret Life Of Bees made a respectable No. 3 showing with $11.05 million. Eagle Eye proved enduring, snagging No. 5 in its fourth week with $7.34 million, ahead of sophomore contenders Body Of Lies at No. 6 ($6.88 million) and Quarantine ($6.3 million). Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist dropped from No. 5 to No. 8 with $3.9 million, ahead of dark-horse newbie Sex Drive, which netted $3.57 million. Nights In Rodanthe rounded out the top 10 with $2.68 million in its fourth week.
