The box office had a busy weekend with four new films debuting in the top 10, all with strong numbers, resulting in grosses 40 percent higher than the same frame last year. Leading the charge was He’s Just Not That Into You, which dominated with $27.47 million, making it the highest-grossing movie based on a book based on a Sex In The City B-story ever. Taken held strong in its second week, dropping only 18 percent to No. 2 with $20.3 million, which gives it a chance of eventually passing $100 million. Coraline opened at No. 3 with $16.34 million, about 60 percent of which came from screens showing the 3D version of the stop-motion film.
Another family-friendly option, The Pink Panther 2, debuted at No. 4 with $12 million, well below the $20 million opening take of its predecessor. It did, however, help knock Paul Blart: Mall Cop down a few pegs to No. 5, though the Kevin James comedy’s $11 million take in its fourth frame is still mighty impressive. Push came in at a moderate No. 6 with $10.2 million, ahead of the long-gestating Gran Torino (No. 7 with $7.42 million in its ninth week) and Slumdog Millionaire (No. 8 with $7.4 million in its 13th week). The Uninvited dropped six spots in its second frame to No. 9 with $6.4 million, while Hotel For Dogs made its (presumably) final top 10 bow at No. 10 with $5.82 million.
