It should come as no surprise, given its record-breaking opening-day take last Wednesday, that Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen wreaked havoc on the box office this weekend. The theoretical nadir of Michael Bay-directed stupidity overcame mostly dismal reviews to open at No. 1 with a $112 million weekend haul. That gives it a total of $201.2 million, the second-highest five-day take ever, behind last summer’s The Dark Knight. It took the first Transformers movie more than twice that amount of time to bring in the same amount; that film ended up grossing $319.2 million. Which means we should all brace ourselves for the 2011 summer blockbuster Transformers 3: ROBOTSGOBOOM!

Last week’s top earner, The Proposal, dipped to No. 2 with $18.47 million, followed closely by The Hangover at No. 3 with $17.2 million, which puts the comedy within spitting distance of the $200 million mark in its fourth frame. No. 4 entry Up overtook Star Trek (still sitting pretty at No. 8 with $3.6 million) as the top earner of the summer so far, taking in $13.05 million this weekend for a total of $250.22 million. The weepy My Sister’s Keeper opened with a moderate $12.03 at No. 5, while Year One took a 70 percent tumble to No. 6 with $5.8 million in its second week. The Taking Of Pelham 123 limped its way through its third frame, landing at No. 7 with $5.4 million. Night At The Museum: Battle Of The Smithsonian took in $3.5 million, enough for a No. 9 showing in its sixth frame, while Away We Go expanded its reach by some 360 or so theaters to move into the top 10 in its fourth frame, taking in $1.68 million.
