Weekend Box Office
After a seemingly never-ending promotional blitz that brought us countless sightings of Sacha Baron Cohen’s bare ass, Bruno finally sashayed into theaters this weekend, unsurprisingly landing at No. 1 with $30.43 million. That’s a solid jump over Cohen’s 2006 hit Borat, which opened with $26.46 million; however, Borat opened in just 837 theaters compared to Bruno’s 2,756, making for a massive $31,607 per-screen average. That, combined with Bruno’s troublesome 39 percent drop from Friday to Saturday, signals that it might not live up to its predecessor’s phenomenon status.
The week’s other new release, I Love You Beth Cooper, is in no danger of hitting anywhere close to phenomenon status. The widely drubbed teen comedy opened at No. 7 with $5 million, and stands to fall out of the top 10 quickly.
Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs held on to its No. 2 spot for its second week in theaters, taking in $28.5 million. Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen ended its two-week stint at No. 1, dropping to No. 3 with $28.2 million. Despite that 43 percent drop, though, the sequel is well on its way to cracking the top 10 all-time highest-grossing domestic films: It currently stands at No. 16 on that list with $339.2 million.
Public Enemies took the biggest hit in the top 10, dropping 44 percent to No. 4 with $14.11 million in its second week. Two durable comedies, The Proposal and The Hangover, held on to the Nos. 5 and 6 spots, respectively. The Proposal took in $10.5 million in its fourth week, ahead of The Hangover’s $9.93 million sixth-week take. No. 8 entry Up wins the longevity award, grossing $4.66 million after seven weeks. The top 10 is rounded out by My Sister’s Keeper at No. 9 with $4.18 million and The Taking Of Pelham 123 at No. 10 with $1.6 million.
