Despite three new films opening in wide release this weekend, the American box office slumped to its lowest point of the summer so far. The latest Judd Apatow R-rated comedy, Funny People, opened at No. 1 with a modest $23.4 million—far below Apatow’s last directorial effort, Knocked Up, which opened with $30.7 million—giving it the lowest take for a No. 1 film all summer. Another new release, the family-friendly Aliens In The Attic, made a minor impact at No. 5 with $7.8 million, while the horror flick The Collector didn’t even crack the top 10 in its debut weekend.
Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince held at No. 2 in its third week with $17.7 million, bolstered by an additional 68 IMAX theaters screening the film. Last week’s champ, the CGI kiddie flick G-Force, dropped two spots to No. 3 with $17.06 million, while romantic comedy The Ugly Truth suffered the largest drop in the top 10, falling 53 percent to No. 4 with $13 million. Orphan fell to No. 6 with $7.25 million, while Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs held up reasonably well in a market saturated with family-friendly films, landing at No. 7 with $5.3 million in its fifth week.
The Hangover continues its nine-week run in the top 10 at No. 8 with $5.08 million, ahead of the similarly robust The Proposal at No. 9 with $4.85 million in its seventh week. Rounding things out it the summer’s biggest blockbuster, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, at No. 10 with $4.6 million, bringing the sequel’s overall take to roughly $388 million in six weeks.
