Weekend Box Office
And so the Tyler Perry machine keeps cranking out the number-ones. The insanely prolific director scored his fifth top-grossing debut in as many years this week with I Can Do Bad All By Myself, which took in an impressive $10,656 average over its 2,255 screens (Perry’s widest release ever). I Can Do Bad’s $24 million take was more than double that of its nearest competitor, the sci-fi animated film 9, which landed at No. 2 with $10.86 million. Farther down the chart, a couple of lackluster thrillers made a couple of lackluster debuts: Sorority Row and Whiteout essentially split their prospective audience, with the former taking No. 6 with $5.27 million, just edging out the latter at No. 7 with $5.1 million.
On the holdover front: Quentin Tarantino crossed the $100 million mark for the second time in his career (the first being Pulp Fiction) with Inglourious Basterds, which dropped to No. 3 in its third week with $6.55 million. And despite worst-film-of-the-year caliber reviews, All About Steve fell a not-terrible 48 percent to No. 4 with $5.8 million. The Final Destination took a steeper fall, to the tune of 56 percent, to No. 5 from the top spot last week, taking in $5.5 million. Another dismally reviewed contender, Gamer, took the biggest tumble, dropping 66 percent to No. 10 in its second week, with $3.15 million. District 9 at No. 8 with $3.6 million and Julie & Julia at No. 9 with $3.3 million round out the week.
