Oz Perkins' The Monkey also had a great opening this weekend.

Captain America: Brave New World falters, but maintains lead at the box office

Captain America: Brave New World may soon need that shield to defend itself against a monkey, a bear, and a dog at the box office. The MCU film managed to maintain its lead this weekend with an additional $28 million haul, but tumbled a massive 68% from its opening last week. That’s not as extreme a fall as either The Marvels  (-78%) or Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania (-70%), Deadline notes, but it’s not looking great for good ol’ Cap.

Hot on the MCU film’s tail is an army of animals in The Monkey, Paddington In Peru, and Dog Man. Oz Perkins’ horror-comedy proverbially killed it in its opening weekend with an impressive $14 million return. The Monkey was made for roughly $11 million (per ScreenRant), and just like Perkins’ last film Longlegs, spent very little on advertising. The lure of that creepy little toy seems to transcend both page and screen.

The Monkey is followed by the sweet Paddington threequel with $7 million and Dog Man with $6 million. Speaking of animals, Mufasa: The Lion King is somehow still a factor. The Disney prequel may not be king of the jungle anymore, but it just spent its 10th weekend in the top 10 with an additional $3 million added to its pride.
