This weekend saw a few twitches of life from the American box office, which has remained sluggish throughout the mid-winter doldrums. For the first time in months, receipts were up from the same period last year, thanks to the one-two punch of the Jet Li/Jackie Chan match-up The Forbidden Kingdom (No. 1 with $20.9 million), and the latest raunchy dude-flick to roll out of Apatown, Forgetting Sarah Marshall (No. 2 with $17.3 million).
Last week's No. 1, Prom Night, thudded down to No. 3, with less than half of its opening-weekend take, $9.1. million, but it was still enough to keep Al Pacino's crime drama 88 Minutes from cracking the top three. Another surprise in the top 10: Ben Stein's Intelligent Design doc, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, came it at No. 9, despite opening on just around 1,000 screens. (Though that's still about 10 times more theaters than the weekend's other documentary release, Morgan Spurlock's Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden saw–not surprisingly, that film failed to crack the top 20.)
