Weekend Box Office: Yeah, Captain Marvel made a lot of money

Duh, of course Captain Marvel is the world’s number one movie. As estimates prophesied, Brie Larson’s solo vehicle appears to have surpassed $150 million domestically, placing it in the orbit of other studio tentpoles, including The Dark Knight and Rogue One. It raked in another $300 million internationally, bringing its weekend gross to roughly $455 million. That makes it the third highest March opening of all time, as well as the sixth largest worldwide debut ever. Sorry, trolls.

Captain Marvel, it appears, also follows the trend set by Black Panther and Ant-Man And The Wasp, which have drawn audiences both older and more diverse. Box Office Mojo reveals that the film’s weekend crowd was 55% male and 45% female, a gender divide proving that the MCU’s attempts at inclusivity are both a critical and commercial success. That bodes well for what appears to be the studio’ future.

Captain Marvel’s success ate into the audiences for previous dominators like How To Train Your Dragon 3, Alita: Battle Angel, and Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral, which saw its audience dip by 55% in its second weekend. Audiences did turn out for another space adventure, however, with moon landing documentary Apollo 11 taking in $1.3 million at 405 theaters. A24's Gloria Bell enjoyed a soft opening on five screens, pulling in $154,775.
