Rob Cohen is best known these days for making trashy action movies like the original xXx, the original The Fast And The Furious, and that one about the evil jet, but he hasn’t really gotten an opportunity to take advantage of the recent trend of well-received trashy action movies. Perhaps that will change with Razor, a new comic book adaptation that Cohen has just signed on to direct.
The original comic was created by Everette Hartsoe, and it was first published by London Night Studios in 1992. Basically, it’s about a young woman whose father and sister are killed by violent criminals, prompting her to go on a bloody quest for vengeance against a crime boss. Naturally, because this was a comic book in the ’90s, that required her to strap giant blades to her arms and become a mostly naked vigilante. The comic takes some turns after that, but the movie version will presumably stick to the relatively straightforward story of a stab-happy woman cleaning up her city with arm-blades.
This news comes from The Wrap, which adds that Cohen also wrote the screenplay for Razor, and in a statement he highlights that the comic has “operatic themes, female empowerment, revenge, action, [and] a love story,” with it all being “shrouded in a delicious darkness that fits our time.”
