After a few years in the proverbial pop-culture dog house, John Mayer is finally enjoying some sunshine of late, with his new record Born And Raised currently enjoying its second week at the top of the Billboard albums chart. Mayer is even doing interviews again, though he's keeping that meddlesome "David Duke cock" of his under wraps in favor of a new, soulful L.A. cowboy look. But just because he's sensitive doesn't mean he won't fight back. In the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone, Mayer says Taylor Swift's 2010 song "Dear John"—which accuses Mayer of using his "dark twisted games" to take advantage of her—"made me feel terrible" and that "it was a really lousy thing for her to do."
Swift's song came out when Mayer was in the midst of the fall-out from his infamous Playboy interview. He says he didn't know how Swift felt about him until the song came out. "I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?"
Oh, and he also thinks the song, musically, is "bullshit." "I will say as a songwriter that I think it's kind of cheap songwriting," he says. "I know she's the biggest thing in the world, and I'm not trying to sink anybody's ship, but I think it's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait till he gets a load of this!'"
