Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen's 10 Things I Hate About You musical sets Broadway opening

As parents and students gear up to head back to class, Broadway is preparing to head back to Padua High. The new musical adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You, based on the 1999 film loosely based on Shakespeare’s Taming Of The Shrew starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, has officially set its Broadway beginning. Its first preview will take place on August 17, 2027—one year from today—with an official opening to follow. The musical also shared its first concept art which looks pretty brat from where we’re sitting.

Of course, nostalgia-fueled adaptations of movies for the musical stage aren’t in and of themselves especially notable, but the pedigree behind 10 Things has colored us intrigued. The music for this endeavor comes from one of pop’s most consistent stars—Carly Rae Jepsen—who works here with songwriter and composer Ethan Gruska and musical supervisor and orchestrator Tom Kitt (who counts other musical hits Next To Normal and Hell’s Kitchen among his repertoire). The most famous name attached thus far, however, is Lena Dunham, who has proven herself an astute chronicler of young(ish) adult life in her post-Girls career with projects like Catherine Called Birdy, Sharp Stick, and Too Much. (Girls, of course, was also pretty damn good at this too.) Dunham writes the musical’s book with playwright Jessica Huang, while Christopher Wheeldon, who directed MJ The Musical on Broadway, will direct and choreograph 10 Things
