Despite having significantly more ‘tude than almost any other video game character in history, Sonic The Hedgehog has always lived under a shadow. No matter how fast he runs, he can’t get ahead of a certain Italian plumber. Mario has iconic facial hair; Sonic looks terrible with a mustache. Mario’s girlfriend is a princess; Sonic’s girlfriend doesn’t really do anything. Mario has enjoyed a consistent level of popularity for over 20 years, and the company that makes Sonic games doesn’t sell video game consoles anymore. Finally, though, Sonic is catching up.
As reported by The Wrap, Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that it’s going to make a “CG-animated/live-action” film adaptation of Sonic The Hedgehog, only 21 years after the Super Mario Bros. movie took Hollywood by storm. The Sonic movie will reportedly try to “capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit,” which probably means that Sonic will cross his arms and tap his feet if you stop paying attention to him for long enough. It will also feature “the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise,” so you can probably count on all of Sonic’s wacky friends to show up, including Tails, Knuckles, Sonic’s Girlfriend, Dr. Eggman, Uncle Ant, and Disgruntled Goat.
The Sonic movie will be written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, neither of whom have too many writing credits to their name, but The Wrap points out that they’re both alumni of the Upright Citizens Brigade. Hopefully that means they’ll be able to bring some clever humor to the project. We don’t know much about the plot, but we can safely assume that it will concern Sonic, a real hedgehog in the real world, accidentally traveling to a magical kingdom through a portal in the sewers. Nothing there will resemble the video games in any way, and the villain will be played by an Oscar-nominated actor who should probably know better. Also, Fisher Stevens will be there.
