NBC developing modern-day gender-swapped Gatsby police procedural

Well, it’s no God Cop, but we’re getting closer. Deadline reports this afternoon that NBC is developing a series based on The Great Gatsby, simply titled Gatsby, set in the modern day with a gender-swapped Nick Carroway. Also, they’re detectives. Now, you may be wondering what DNA this series will share with F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel beyond one-and-a-half character names. We can’t answer that, though we’ll state the obvious fact that it seems far easier to get something greenlit in the current media ecosystem if it has some tie to IP. We imagine it’s even easier if that IP entered the public domain within the past few years.

According to a logline from Deadline, Gatsby will be a “modern-day police procedural about Det. Jay Gatsby, a devilishly charming investigator with a con-man’s gift for reading human behavior, and decorated New York State Police Det. Nicole “Nicky” Carraway, who was born to be a cop but dreams of becoming a writer.” We also like to ask what exactly makes Nicole “born to be a cop,” but we suppose that answer will come in due time. There’s no timeline for when this might come to the screen, but the series comes from writers and executive producers Jake Coburn and Jason Tracey. The latter was an executive producer on all seven seasons of Elementary, which makes sense given it was, you know, a police procedural with a gender-bent twist based on a piece of classic (and public domain) literature.
